Towards the end of last year, the CHARTER project, in collaboration with a number of other projects (POVAUS, CLIMINI and POMURI) organised a workshop in Inari in connection with the Reindeer and Fish Science Days (Poro- ja kalapäivät). The objective of the interactive workshop was to examine and discuss the current state and future developments of reindeer husbandry and how reindeer herders can prepare for surprising future developments – examining the ‘dreams and surprises’ that reindeer herders have for the coming decades. This workshop was a little different in that it used specially created playing cards to generate wide ranging discussions on these ‘dreams and surprises’.
The workshop was attended by nearly 40 people, and we are now publishing two working papers which give an overview of the goals, aims and recommendations that emerged from it. You can read and download the full report in Finnish (Porotalouden tulevaisuus: unelmia ja yllätyksiä – Työpajaraportin yhteenveto) and an English language summary (The Future of Reindeer Husbandry: Surprises and Dreams, A Workshop Summary Report) here on our website, or below.
